BALANCING WEIGHTS OF LEAD

Directive 2000/53/EC on “End of Life Vehicles” established that vehicles
type-approved according to 70/156/EU (whole vehicle type-approved) as of July 1, 2003
must not contain: heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium or hexavalent chromium)
Balancing weights are not exempted.

Vehicles type-approved before the above date are exempted until further notice.
At a meeting with TAC on March 16, 2005, the question was raised what to do
with the remaining stocks of lead weights. The EU Commission clarified that lead weights
placed on the market (“put on the market”) before July 1, 2005 may be used.
Therefore, lead balancing weights in stock may continue to be used. The date in
Annex II is only valid for the date of placing on the market.
Lead weights intended for vehicles registered according to Directive 70/156/EC and
sold after July 1, 2005 may not be used!
